In the world of home services, where HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, and more meet expertise, a leader’s journey can be as complex and intricate as the systems they manage. Chris recently sat down with Amanda Zink, President of Air Control Home Services, for her first solo podcast interview. Hailing from Lake Havasu, Arizona, Amanda shared her remarkable story of taking the reins of a family business, navigating the challenges of a pandemic, and her thoughts on the future of female leadership in the trades.
Amanda’s path to leadership is unique. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northern Arizona University, she initially had no plans to join the home services industry. However, a twist of fate on her college graduation day led her to accept a job offer from her father, allowing her to live at home, pay off debt, and start a fresh chapter. Little did she know, this decision would set the stage for her ascent up the corporate ladder.
In 2019, Amanda, alongside her brother, took on the challenge of buying her parents’ company. The timing, amidst the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, made the endeavor even more daunting. Air Control Home Services, rooted in new construction, now serves a population of 150,000 in Lake Havasu, AZ.
Despite the unexpected journey into the home services realm, Amanda’s determination led her from doing clerical work to taking on the position of General Manager for the company and, eventually – President.
Amanda and Chris reflect on the industry’s struggles in 2023, acknowledging the resilience needed to weather these challenges.
One notable influence in Amanda’s professional life is Claire Ferrara, Owner and President of Standard Heating & Air Conditioning (and a positive female role model in the industry), who has been instrumental in her journey. While acknowledging the scarcity of female trailblazers before her, Amanda emphasizes her desire to see more women taking on leadership roles in the future.
The conversation turns to the broader topic of female leadership, with Chris highlighting the importance of selecting the best person for the job, irrespective of gender. He shares the example of RYNO, where 70% of employees are women, including a female COO, Anna Yano.
Looking ahead to 2024, Amanda reveals that Air Control Home Services is taking it back to basics. Despite running a successful company during challenging times, she expresses the need to fine-tune smaller details, focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs) and their call center operations. The company aims to build on its foundation, ensuring a solid framework for sustained success in the years to come.
