Listen Now

As a leader, you have the keys to your destiny. Brian Gottlieb started with $3,000 and a plastic folding table and grew multiple businesses to teams of 600+ and nearly a billion dollars in lifetime sales. On today’s episode of To The Point, hosts Chris Yano and Chad Peterman have a deep, meaningful conversation with Brian about his journey and what he’s learned that can help contractors find success in their businesses today. Listen or watch now!

A Life in the Industry

Brian grew up in the home services and improvement industry. He remembers sitting at the kitchen table selling pots and pans, kitchen improvement supplies, and everything else. In 2009, he decided to start his own business. Over time, that beginning turned into highly successful organizations including Renewal by Anderson and Jacuzzi Bath Remodel. A few years ago, he made a very successful exit.

Now, Brian is focused on giving back to the industry by sharing what he has learned and mentoring others. Making an impact is his motivation, and this episode is packed with lots of nuggets for business owners, managers, and leaders alike!

In this episode, we talk to Brian about:
  • Defining purpose and impact as an entrepreneur
  • Leadership and culture as the foundation for growth
  • Training managers as the custodians of company culture
  • Fixing bad culture: inspecting what you tolerate
  • Simplifying systems — “complexity is the enemy of execution”
  • Creating clarity through KPIs and business disciplines
  • Mentoring, giving back, and legacy in the home services industry
  • The story behind Beyond the Hammer and what it means
  • And more!

Along with everything in this episode, Brian has poured out his knowledge into a book, Beyond the Hammer. It’s a leadership book written for leaders and managers in the blue collar industry to understand what it takes for an organization to win, and how to get everyone involved in that process. Check it out!

Simplicity, Culture, and Destiny

As Brian looks back, one of the biggest lessons he’s learned is that complexity is the enemy of execution. It’s difficult to scale, and can lead to “FUD” (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) in your team. Naturally, this means the key to business is simplicity. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential if you’re going to scale.

When you keep things simple and execute on your plan, your wildest dreams will start to feel like your destiny. So go all in on developing and building your team, and you’ll realize the two most important days of your life: the day you’re born, and the day you figure out why.

NO. ZERO. DAYS.
