We have a show for you! Live from RYNOx 2023, Paul and Josh Kelly give an incredible presentation on the question no one is asking. Paul Kelly is President and Owner of Parker & Sons, and former podcast guest Josh Kelly is COO and Co-Founder of Clover Marketing.

Parker & Sons is a family business that has been around since the 1970’s, and is about 4 times bigger than the closest competitor in their Phoenix service area. Why and how did they achieve such a dominant market share, and how can other contractors duplicate this success? It all starts with a question that business owners, technicians, and even PE firms aren’t asking – and it might just be the most important questions you’ve ever asked about your business and maybe even your life!

Why Are There So Many Ice Cream Flavors?

That brings us to the question: “why are there so many ice cream flavors?” Stay with us, here. There are thousands of ice cream flavors, but only 3 that actually matter. Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry. They dominate the market. So even with thousands of flavors, only 3 really matter. Most of the other flavors use vanilla, too.

Why? It’s about simplicity. Simplicity is the key to everything, including your business. The more simple the ingredients to an idea or process, the easier it is to implement in your business (or life!) and scale it. Simplicity is the key to success at Parker & Sons, and the key at Wrench Group. It’s about how simple can you make something. The more simple, the better. If things are too complicated like Rocky Road ice cream, it can make it harder. Not everyone can make it, and it becomes less consistent with more people making it.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
  • How simple is scalable
  • The Rules of Scalability
  • How to grow your business earlier, faster, and better
  • How to create a simple and scalable sales system
  • Why the game of telephone doesn’t work

Be Vanilla!

Parker & Sons is approaching the 300MM mark, and it’s about being Vanilla. Keep things simple, and that makes it scalable! A lot of this incredible business insight and wisdom can also be found in Paul Kelly’s book, Tricks of the Trade to Success.
